Why It Matters
I can imagine what some of you are thinking: "In an email about youth and mentoring, why is he recommending a podcast about trading and financial analytics?" That's a great question! :)
I often have conversations with high school juniors and seniors. When I encourage them to find out how potential colleges will prepare them for the AI revolution, most of them seem like they haven't even considered the impact of AI on their potential career path. Instead, most have the mindset that their careers will look similar to their parents' or older siblings' careers.
As adults, it's our job to think ahead and to help the teens we care about think ahead too. That's why I'm recommending this podcast. We must help teens shift their mindset and understand that AI must be taken into consideration as they consider their lives after high school. While this podcast is primarily about AI transforming the financial sector, it's a great case study about the transformation AI will bring to every sector.
How to Use it
The first 45 minutes discuss the guest's background and how AI is changing the financial industry. Don't skip over that part - it sets the stage for the last 15 minutes that discuss the bigger implications.
Whether you listen to the podcast together with an older teen or listen to it separately, discussion will be important for them to understand it well.
The podcast focuses primarily on business, but AI has implications for every career. Sit down with a teen and use ChatGPT, typing in a prompt that begins with, "How is AI changing..." Complete that question with whatever career they're interested in. Trades will be impacted by the AI revolution too, and ChatGPT is an easy way to show them that.
If the teen is considering college, make sure they ask how colleges are preparing students for the future with AI. Are the colleges preparing them for the future, or are they preparing them for the past?
Remind teens that the AI revolution isn't necessarily bad and they don't have to be afraid of it. They can prepare for it and adapt to it!
