The Future of AI
Worth Your Time!
Resource Recommendations to Help You Parent and Mentor Most Effectively
"There is room for hope, which is different than saying I’m optimistic about things going well. But if we do not leave room for hope, then the belief that this is inevitable will make it inevitable.” - Aza Raskin
Why It Matters:
While this podcast about artificial intelligence (AI) isn't specifically about youth, it is about their (and our) future. How can we prepare teens for the future if we don’t understand what they will face?
Aza Raskin and Tristan Harris cofounded the Center for Humane Technology, host the "Your Undivided Attention" podcast, and appear in the documentary "The Social Dilemma." They are highly regarded experts in the fields of technology and AI, and they asked to go on Joe Rogan’s podcast again to inform the public about current and future AI uses. They seek to explain all of it in a way the average person can understand.
This is a sobering conversation. It should spur us to prepare teens spiritually for the challenges that lie ahead, even in the not-too-distant future.
How to Use It
If you haven’t already seen it, consider watching the documentary "The Social Dilemma" first. It will require signing up for a one-month subscription to Netflix.
If you use the Spotify app to listen to the podcast, you’ll have to create an account, but it’s free.
The Joe Rogan Experience is a long-form podcast. It’s like listening in on a 2–3-hour conversation. There is some crude conversation in the beginning of this episode and language throughout it.
Listen to the whole episode. Yes, I know it’s long – but it’s important and it’s worth it. It doesn't have to be listened to all at once. I listened to it while making dinner, eating dinner, getting ready in the morning, eating breakfast, and driving.
This is the world the youth we care about will live in, and the information Raskin and Harris share may frighten you. Currently, many teens’ main concerns are sports, TikTok videos, and video games, but it won’t stay that way forever. How can we prepare them for the very serious times that likely lie ahead? This episode should remind us of the importance of what we do as parents and mentors and motivate us to increase our efforts to help ground them in their faith now. Ephesians 6:13: “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”
I’m recommending this podcast primarily for adults. I’m not sure that most youth can understand the implications of what Raskin and Harris share, but there may be some topics which could be explored with some teens – what it means to be human, what the purpose(s) and use(s) of technology on both personal and societal levels should be, where our ultimate hope is (or should be), etc.
Happy listening! :)
